Hastings on Hudson Insider: Westchester County Legislator Mary Jane Shimsky 12th District: National Prescription Drug Take Back Day - Saturday, 4/30.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 30.

On National Drug Take Back Day, Saturday, April 30, The Way will be hosting a prescription drug drop-off event from 10:00 AM – 2:00 P.M. at the V.F.W. at 558 Warburton Avenue in Hastings-on-Hudson.

Are unused and expired drugs cluttering your cabinets?

Safely disposing of unused or expired pills, liquid medications and ointments keeps them from being misused and keeps people and pets safe from accidental poisoning. To protect our drinking water, rivers, streams and aquatic life, never flush medications. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year, that the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else’s medication being stolen from a home medicine cabinet.

To dispose of unwanted prescription drugs throughout the year, Westchester residents can make an appointment to bring drugs in their original container or a sealed plastic bag to the county Household Material Recovery Facility at 15 Woods Road in Valhalla. Medications are only accepted on designated days. When booking an appointment, you will select your zip code and then be able to view the calendar of available days, including designated med take-back days. You can call the Recycling HelpLine at (914) 813-5425 for more information or to make an appointment.

The County also has installed locked and secured collection boxes at police department locations throughout Westchester, where medications can be dropped off. Most are available 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Calling ahead is advised.

Hastings On Hudson Insider: A historical tour History of Quarry Park Hastings.

A tour on Wed morning sponsored by the Old Croton Aqueduct State Park Education Program.

If you like history and are free this Wednesday this tour should be very interesting.

 PAUL FEINER

A History of Quarry Park, Hastings.

Wednesday, April 6, 2022 - 10:00am

Part of the Sites of Interest Along the Old Croton Aqueduct series.

Quarrying was one of Hastings’ first industries. White dolomite limestone, or marble, was cut from an outcropping in the Village and sold for construction material. This marble was shipped on schooners to locations throughout the eastern seaboard. Opposition to blasting by neighbors shut the quarry down in 1870. It was sold in 1899 to National Conduit, a precursor to Anaconda. They used the quarry spring water as a coolant. The site also enjoyed a golden age as a bird sanctuary and then a dark period as a garbage dump. Join us to hear these and other stories that explain the history of this fascinating new park!

Address: Observatory Cottage in Draper Park, 407 Broadway, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY 10706.

If weather permits, we will go for a walk along the Aqueduct after the presentation. Participants will be asked to voluntarily wear a mask when indoors. Free KN95 masks will be provided to those who would like one.

Contact: laura.compagni@parks.ny.gov. Register in advance. Space is limited.

Hastings on Hudson Insider: Westchester County Legislator Mary Jane Shimsky 12th District: Mobile Shredder is coming to Hastings-on-Hudson - Saturday, 3/19.

Mobile Shredder is coming to Hastings-on-Hudson.

Saturday, March 19, 2022 from 10:00 AM  to 1:00 PM

Chemka Pool Parking Lot (1 Chemka Pool Rd).

Residents can bring up to 4 file-size (10”x12”x15”) boxes of confidential papers per household for shredding.  Please remove all large binder clips and covers.  Papers from businesses, institutions or commercial enterprises are not acceptable and will be rejected, as will any junk mail or newspapers.

First come, first served

Service at the events works on a first-come-first-served basis, as the Mobile Shredder unit can reach its maximum capacity before closing time. In extreme weather, events may be cancelled or terminated early.

Please call the county's Recycling Helpline at (914) 813-5425 to check on a cancellation or early closure.

Important information

It is important to be aware of what you place the paper to be shredded – no matches, lighters or anything combustible. Staff at the events will be checking the material prior to being shredded.

Kinds of documents to shred

Remember, it's best to shred documents you're no longer using, that contain personal identifying information such as name, address, phone number, credit card number or social security number. Such documents should be shredded before they are thrown out for recycling. Some examples are:

  • expired credit card statements and receipts
  • old tax returns or any other personal documents containing you name, address or other identifying information.
  • pre-approved credit card applications
  • licenses

As this service is gaining in popularity, residents should be prepared to wait as lines are sometimes long. However, the wait doesn't have to be that long. Come prepared. This means you've removed all metal clips, fasteners, binders, folders and hard covers and placed the papers loosely in a box. Hard covers – cardboard or plastic covers on items such as ledger books, marble composition books and hard-cover books – cannot be shredded and will be turned away. Residents must rip pages out from hard cover books for shredding and throw the covers in their regular household trash. Up to four boxes of papers are allowed for shredding.

For more information about identity theft, call the Dept. of Consumer Protection (914) 995-2155. For questions about recycling, call (914) 813-5425, the Recycling Helpline.
