A History of Quarry Park, Hastings.

Wednesday, April 6, 2022 - 10:00am

Part of the Sites of Interest Along the Old Croton Aqueduct series.

Quarrying was one of Hastings’ first industries. White dolomite limestone, or marble, was cut from an outcropping in the Village and sold for construction material. This marble was shipped on schooners to locations throughout the eastern seaboard. Opposition to blasting by neighbors shut the quarry down in 1870. It was sold in 1899 to National Conduit, a precursor to Anaconda. They used the quarry spring water as a coolant. The site also enjoyed a golden age as a bird sanctuary and then a dark period as a garbage dump. Join us to hear these and other stories that explain the history of this fascinating new park!

Address: Observatory Cottage in Draper Park, 407 Broadway, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY 10706.

If weather permits, we will go for a walk along the Aqueduct after the presentation. Participants will be asked to voluntarily wear a mask when indoors. Free KN95 masks will be provided to those who would like one.
